Cocoa Mulch and Chocolate: DON’T

It's bad enough that I drink this nasty pond water.

Nasty pond water is one thing, but you can bet I’m not going to eat any cocoa mulch!

An e-mail’s circulating around my neighborhood about the dangers of using cocoa mulch in the garden. And, since it’s that time of year where I live, I thought I’d just remind you.

Just say “no” to cocoa mulch and chocolate Easter bunnies!  (Wait…did somebody say “bunnies”? Which way? Lemme at ‘em!)

Read this and you’ll know all about the dangers of these things.  Especially to us dogs. Seems there’s an ingredient in chocolate (and cocoa mulch) that, along with caffeine, can cause some serious damage.  Even death!

No bunnie is worth dying for.  Especially the chocolate ones.  But….they’d be fun to root around for wouldn’t they? Huummm…….

What You Learned Today:

  • Be careful with what we might eat.  I know, I know.  I eat sticks. Dirt. Grass. All kinds of things. You probably do, too.
  • Check all the ingredients in things before using it, spreading it, serving it, etc. You never know what might happen to us.
  • She even trims off the stem ends of the string beans She feeds me.  (Now I ask you, why would you do that for somebody who eats sticks? God love Her. She tries.)

About The Scottie Chronicles

I'm a seven-year old brindle, black and white (yes, you read that correctly) Scottish Terrier with plenty to bark about! Come along with me on my journey through life. With two peeps. A couple of girlfriends next door. And lots of friends in the blog-o-sphere.

Chocolate is a serious problem in our house, if it is anywhere near where Pippi can get to it she will. She will climb, dig and tear to eat it. We have learned that if you give a dog peroxide they vomit the contents of their stomachs. We mix it with milk so she’ll drink it. It is faster and cheaper then an emergency vet visit.

I know this is gross but for our usually well behaved dog this is her vise.

    • Thanks for the reminder about hydrogen peroxide. They found out about that when They were dogsitting for two cocker spaniels who They thought ate some rat poison. They lapped up that stuff like nobody’s business. BoBo, on the other hand, would have nothing to do with it and clenched his mighty Scottie jaws shut so tight, They had to take him to the vet to make him vomit. Turns out, all were well, but you never know do you? Roo Roo, Stuart

Especially with puppies who seem to get into everything without any reservation (no training at that point) it is dangerous to have chocolate anywhere. Even without dogs in your own house, I think it’s important that neighbors be aware of the cocoa mulch thing. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for someone’s beloved pet. Plant and Garden Blog

    • You’re so right Ann. Thanks for pointing out that neighbor’s stuff can be harmful, too. I know I used to put lots of things in my mouth when I was a puppy! Your blog is beautiful by the way. (Wish you could help Us determine why two of Our trees seem to be dying.) Roo Roo to You and Yours, Stuart

  3. And Scottie owners especially need to be aware that may lawn products can cause bladder cancers in Scotties. All natural is the best way to go.

    • WHOAA! Cancer in Scotties isn’t pretty. BoBo had cancer, but it was caught early and he lived years after his surgery! Whew. Thanks for bringing this up. Natural, natural, natural. We don’t even spray Our house for spiders and stuff. Afraid I’ll get into the stuff. Roo Roo, Stuart

  4. Good on ya Stuart, you’re always thinking of the rest of us. We’ll remember about the mulch. We don’t have chocolate in the house……Alpha doesn’t like it. Our spiders run free, too. But mostly because Alpha thinks the little lizards will eat them and die. She likes the little skinks.

    XXXOOO Daisy, Kendra & Bella

  5. Try telling our chocolate Lab why she can’t have chocolate chip cookies. She’s doing her best not to understand. :)

    • That’s trouble. Maybe carob chip cookies are OK??? As I’ve said a million times, humans do WEIRD things. To torture a dog by calling her “chocolate” then her not being able to EAT ANY!!! Roo Roo, Stuart
