I’m no bird, and I certainly don’t have any offspring to feed with partially digested foodstuffs, but lately I’ve turned into quite the regurgitator.
Just about every meal I’ve had this week has come right back up. Sorry, it’s gross, I know, but I’m wondering if it’s the heat? Or a sensitive stomach? Or just a dog thing. (Who knows what I pick up in my yard to gnaw on and swallow.)
Do you guys ever go through a period of time when almost everything comes back up from the pit of your stomach? I mean, I feel perfectly fine. Spry as a chicken. Waggin’ my tail and stuff like that. In fact, I just finished running up a flight of stairs to attack to say “hey!” to the mailman.
See? Now I’m even sitting on the edge of my bed. Getting ready to take a little snooze.
Wonder what’s up?
What You Learned Today:
- Sometimes we doggies just feel like throwing up.
- Sorry, gross, but true.
- I don’t think the peeps do that much. Unless They’re ill. Really ill.
- I’m not really ill.
- But I’m getting kind of tired of all the regurgitating going on.
- Hey peep…..make an appointment at my dogtor, will you?
- Just to make sure everything’s OKEYDOKEY.

Milly, our Cocker Spaniel, has a few days in a row when she tries to throw up but never manages anything. Hope you keep things down soon Stuart, not good to vom too much
Stuart I’m so sorry. My little girl Scout when through that exact same thing when she was about a year old. Everything that went on her tummy came back up – even her heartworm pills, etc. I finally took her to a specialist because my vet was at a loss and he said that he wanted scope her (both ends) which would require a hospital stay and what I’m guessing some unpleasant procedures or…. we could try putting her on a vet diet. It had to be a foreign protein and a foreign starch he said. So we started with Royal Canin’s fish and potato. Well, Scout wouldn’t touch that stuff so we switched to venison and potato (you have to get it through a vet) and she liked that. As soon as she started eating that diet her barfing quit. She’s been great ever since. She acted just like you though when she was going through that – perfectly fine and very hungry but nothing would stay down. I even had her to the emergency room one time because I was so worried and they gave her fluids. So…. this would be a very inexpensive and noninvasive first step I would think. Right? Good luck sweetie!
Yes definitely see the dog-tor! Rest the tummy, means NO food, little bit water should be okay, until you see the vet. Also bring a stool sample.Get well little sweetie, and keep us posted please.
I have stuff that comes up periodically. It is usually stuff I pick up outside. Last night I was hacking and she kept an eye on me but today Zip!! So who knows.

I am a almost 10 year old Scottie Guy as well.. Been having very similar issues. My People have had me to the Vet many times for this since February.. They did find a spot on my spleen so I had that taken out On Good Friday, but it was just an enlarged blood vessel..I eat well for a couple of days then don’t eat for a day or so. The Vet said no people food just low fat, low protein dog food. (My people have been starving me of my favorite foods since this past Saturday, but I still throw up every couple of days.) My Lady person is very patient with this but the Guy person sneaks me stuff I am not supposed to have then panics and then wants to call or take me back to the Vet when I spit up mucous or regurgitate food.. Let me know if you have any tips.. The vet told my people that a dog will not starve itself to death but they are not so convinced because i really do not want to eat dog food as I am a gentleman’s gentleman.( i do sneak in bites when they are not looking) (They tried for about 6 weeks to feed me canned food that i like but I did not eat that too well either plus I was getting fed 3-4 times a day after my surgery)
Joules was sick like that when we had our first hot summer day a few weeks ago! She was sick…er…from both ends. It was soooooo bad mama made her chicken & rice for one week! I think she faked it to get chicken!

I could be sarcastic and tell you to create a new event in the Blogville Olympics. But this is serious. Kenzie had the same problem (I’d never waste food like that) and our vet is a damn good diagnostician (Kenzie, that means he finds out what the boo-boo is). It turned out to be IBS-Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It’s the diet, like Scout says. You don’t need to get expensive dog good from the vet. Kenzie gets Dick van Patten’s Natural Balance vegetarian formula and he’s much better, although he’s not any smarter. I eat is also and it has the opposite effect on me-the princess is prettier! Try a can or a small bag-see if it works for you.
There are no foreign proteins or startches-it’s made in the USA.
Oh Stuart, that is so not good! It’s very difficult for our Peeps to gauge our health on occasions like this, especially when we do everything else ok, ‘cept the eating bit. We hope its only a short term thingy and that you’re back to your normal self in no time.
My people are wondering if this is a Scottie thing?? I just came to live here about 2 years ago when my Paw died he was my Lady Person’s Dad. My People only had Annie the Cocker Spaniel Princess before ,She died last year she was almost 19. Annie never had issues eating or getting sick. So they are at a loss and worry alot. About Three weeks ago I was at the Vets and had to get fluids because I got overheated and was not drinking or eating..
That happened to my sissy Cinderella for a while. It turned out she had some kind of infection that made her intestines get all swollen and lumpy. She took some medicine for a while and was all better!
Oh Stuart!
Bridget NEVER barfs unless she eats something really nasty. Moi, however, I do it every couple of days or so. Vet said it could be an acid problem since I used to do it at night, so now I get my second meal of the day a bit later in the evening than I used to and no more problems at night. But, I love to eat grass and who knows what else in the yard, so if I’m in the house, I just go get my mom and ask her to take me to the garage or the yard so I don’t mess up the rugs or the floor. I’ll then come right back in and eat if it’s dinner time with no problem. Sometimes she finds a piece of mulch or a gravel or a stick that I’ve managed to swallow when she cleans it up – other times it’s just grass. We think that with me it IS just a Scottie thing. You’d think I’d learn after a while, wouldn’t you?!
Your niece,
Cally
OK Stuart, get to the dogter, Sidebite is in the hospital now cause he was upchucking everything on Tuesday night, dad stayed up with him, and went to the dogter when they opened, Lady said is some ergonomic something or other. But he is on a IV so not to dehydrate and some meds. SO’S go and check it out, when it is hot , we just done eat every day and we are OK.
Susie (Missing My Bubby)
oh no, susie-q! we sure hope that sidebite gets to come home real soon and that he’s all healthy and okay and everything!
edgar and his mum
Run to the dogtor! This is not normal and can be lots of bad things- IBD, Giarda, bloat ,a piece of a toy stuck in your innards, a chipper, chipper poop- better to get it checked out. And until you get in, no food! Mac has IBD and did this and got better with some pills and staying on a special food called EH. He almost died before we figured out what was wrong.
Hope you feel better soon! The Naughtie Scotties love you!
yikes stuart! that sound no good! i did have something similar a few years ago…i seemed just happy as lark to mum, but in the middle of the night – bleh! (you know what i mean, right?). we went off to see the dogtor and she said it was probably just acid, that my tummy & innard parts felt okay. she recommended chickenandrice and a little bit of pepcid before bed. it, cleared up and i’ve never had a problem since! hope everythings simple and okay with you stuart, my friend!
edgar & his mum
OH YOU GUYS! Y’all are the best to give me all of this good information. Thank YOUUUUUUU! (Glad I’m not the only one who upchucks. What a word: “upchuck” – eeeEEEEw.)
So, I’ve had some rice since my last little unpleasantness this morning. ONLY RICE. And some water. So far so good.
You know what? It’s time for my annual physical, so I’m thinking I’ll ask the peeps to get me in to see My Dogtor Lori Elliott (the BEST) sooner rather than later.
Thanks for thinking of me. Truly, according to your comments, there are LOTS of regurgitators out there! And you know what else? There are lots of sensitive tummies out there, too. And, yes, lots of those of us who gnaw on things like kittie-bon-bons, sticks, grass and stuff.
My poor peep thought there was something wrong with my green beans SO SHE THREW THEM AWAY!!!! (They smelled perfectly fine to me, I just kept giving them back to Her in a not-so-nice way.)
thank you. roo. stu.
Charcoal Cookies !!!!!!!!! Me the Reilly dog does the barfy thing every night unless I have I have my charcoal cookies – they help absorb the acid in the tummy that makes me queasy. They are made by Old Mother HUbbard and are called Char Tar Cookies. All the pet food stores have them
When do eat the Cookies ? Just before bed ? or just after dinner?
I have been Taking a Pepcid before bed, and if I can’t seem to keep anything down I get a Carafate..
Thanks for the tip about Char Tar Cookies for queasy tummies..
Hope You feel Much better Stu!
I would say it was going around, but it would have to go a long way to get all the way to Floyd who woke everyone up last night to throw up a couple of times.
In the end he got up what was troubling him… A big lump of undigested and unchewed food!
He really needs to remember to chew his food!
Oooooo, Stuart you have the erkies. So far, we haven’t had that problem though occasionally one of us will have a night of erkies. It comes and goes and we don’t know what causes it. Hope it gets straightened out.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
Thank you my furiends. So far, still so good. Rice is in the ‘ole tummy where it should stay. I’ll keep you guys posted on my erkies, urpies, up-em-chuck-em’s – whatever you call it.
roo. urp. stu
Oh I have no advice because I have a cast iron stomach. Perhaps though you should go to the vet.
Sweet William The Scot
Hi Stuart! Looks like there’s lots out there that have this problem. My little lady Ellie (she’s not a Scottie, she’s a Westie) had this problem lots and we took her to see the vet a few times. Like, you she showed no other signs of being poorly either.
We tried various things but in the end, the vet said we should always make sure to feed Ellie on the ‘Light’ variation of her food and since then (touch wood) we’ve had no problems, she’s just got a really sensitive tum!
Hope it’s as easy to sort for you too!
Alyssa, Mr. Fox & Scruffy
Oh Stewart…… Your peeps are so worried about little you. Being a little ‘die hard’ scottie(as we are known for) can even make the peeps more concerned. Our clan mom has a hard time understanding how we can ‘hurl’ then go chase a squirrel……… Rice is a good thing ! Enjoy it!!
Let us know what the ‘doc’ says.
