Can You Change a Habit?

Oh me. I need your help. Again.

OK. Here’s a question. Is it possible to change a habit? You know, something you’re used to doing over and over again? Are there any dog human trainers out there?

See, now that I’m on the road to creating a svelte self, We’re cutting back on my green bean intake. So that means I have to get used to some new routines.

See that stick in front of me? Now, I love my “stick time” with my peeps. There are certain times of the day when We play stick. Usually. And some surprise times to play stick. We don’t want to change that habit.

We want to change all the eating “just because” habits. See, I usually get a little “night cap” of green beans after Our before-bedtime walk and, well, last night She only gave me TWO GREEN BEANS. Not the little plate that I usually get. AND, to make matters worse, when my food allotment is done for the day, IT’S DONE. She scolds Him for giving me more.

How’s a guy supposed to deal with that? (Me, not Him.)

To be fair, Dr. Elliott told Them not to cut back to near nothing all at once. Do it gradually. OK. They’re doing that, but I’m still hungry and I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do when I’m used to doing something else!!!!!

Any ideas anybody?

What You Learned Today:

  • Whew. I don’t think I’m going to mind eating less of my beans, but I do mind that I don’t get what I want when I’m used to getting it.
  • How am I supposed to understand that They’re doing all this food adjusting for my own good? I think They’re PUNISHING ME!!!
  • What do you do when things change around your house?
  • OH….I see where y’all liked yesterday’s post about the Scottie stuff. I’m on the hunt for more…….

Boy, Stuart! I don’t know how you do that. I hate it when MyPerson changes things. We are hooked on the 1/2 of a MilkBone that we get in the morning. If we don’t get it at the scheduled time, we pester the heck out of them. Sometimes humans forget things, you know. I guess you get used to change though. It probably takes a lot of time. Are you really hungry or just bored? or is it just a habit? I could eat all day if MyPerson would let me but I don’t think I’m really hungry. I just like to eat! – Duncan

That is tuff. I would say she is good to cut back on the beans to once a day but yah!! you gotta have more than just 2!!WHAT do they expect outta you? Maybe cut back to just a pawfull?? With Addy around she eats twice a day and so with our different food, I eat twice a day too. She will give me my food at lunchtime and let us have a few bites of what she is cooking!! It is fine with me, so it works. Good luck BUddy!! Let her hear that tummy growl and she will feel sorry fur you. That worked fur me, I was sleeping and she could hear it growling and she said she felt bad and gave me some more food!!

Stuart your Mom is cutting back on the wrong thing. Frozen green beans have very little calories, sodium, natural sugar or carbohydrates and no fat or cholesterol. They are a great source of fiber. They are a source of protein and vitamins. Best of all they are great to chew and fill you up. We get a hand full of frozen green bean pieces each night on our kibble..

I have the same problem. I LOVE to eat. I pester Them throughout the day and night. I make a random treat one day a demand for another at the same time the next day. Now Kenzie the westie sometimes doesn’t even eat his regular meals and he has no weight problem. Join me in wondering about Kenzie.

Stuart-I had a bright idea. He told me that when He was younger and just licensed to drive, He asked His parents for help getting a car and was told that He could get one when He paid for it. He then said that He could afford a used motorcycle. Wow, did He get help getting a car that was “safer” than a cycle. Let’s learn from this-tell Them that the only way you can see to curb appetite is to take up smoking and you’re starting tomorrow.

We’ve hit the same problem. Bella and Kendra try to suppliment their food intake with snacks they find on the road.

Ok, I have been meaning to write you! So beans are high in carbs…infact if it was her on a strict diet, she’d only be able to have them in the morning when she woke up and after a long walk or something cause the body is burning energy then. My doc told me that dogs are like people…only we don’t know when to stop eating. What if you got a couple of small meals a day, like 5…maybe some kibble and beans in the morning and then just some kibble during the day and then after you night walk how about a few more beans! This way you still get what you want and they are a treat you look forward to getting. AND the best part is that you won’t be hungry waiting for the next meal…but the key is little meals, not the normal cup or so. Run it by your doc and see if it’s ok. I only get one meal in the morning and sometimes I save it until dinner time so that I can eat when they do. Pretty soon she’s going to start cutting back on my treats too cause chunk-o boy here has alot of meat on his ribs so they may be thinking about hiding!

    • Hoke! My friend! We’re in this together. And I’m thinking the small meal thing might be the way to go. (You have no idea how many beans I used to eat a day.) Thanks ever so for sharing your thoughts. They’re good thoughts, too. Westies have a way of sharing good thoughts.

      Arooooo! Stuart

  8. Hey Buddy, Two green beans sounds like a big cutback to us – hardly enough to make you lick your lips after you’ve eaten them. Do you ever get a boiled egg – now that’s a treat that will stick with you!!
