About My Ears

Here are my ears.

Here are my ears when I was just a wee lad.

Sometimes, I put my ears back. Like this.

No doubt about it, my ears are perhaps one of my best features. Along with everything else about moi.

Lots of people wonder about Scottie ears. When they stand up, what to do if they don’t stand up, what if only one stands up…that kind of thing.

Here’s the deal:

  • Scottie ears usually “prick” up when puppies are around 8 – 10 weeks old.
  • They aren’t cropped or docked in any way. They stand up on their own.
  • A good clipper cut on the ears helps reduce the weight from the hair. And that helps the ears stand up.

And that’s all there is to it.

What You Learned Today:

  • Lots of people want to know about my ears.
  • From when I was around eight weeks old, I had my head “clippered” at Godmother Carol’s.
  • So, when it was time for me to get a big boy haircut, I was used to it.
  • One ear stood up before the other one.
  • The peeps cried when that happened. (She cried when I cocked my leg for the first time, too. Geesh.)
  • I guess that’s kind of a rite of passage.

About The Scottie Chronicles

Winston welcomes you to The Scottie Chronicles - a blog that began in 2009 as a voice for Stuart, a more than memorable black, brindle and white Scottish Terrier who captured hearts around the world. Stuart passed suddenly in December 2015 from cardiac hemangiosarcoma, a nasty cancer that took him far too early. If you love Scotties, please follow along. Arroooo!

  1. Tis like it in most breeds I think – it is the same for us shelties. My ears both flop down but the dweebs brother – both of his stand up. They all do the same thing – hear the words cookie and walkies 🙂

Scotty ears remind me of “radar”…They can be “turned’,even independently to catch special sounds when deemed necessary to detect ‘chippers, squirrels or the crunching of potato chips’.
    Terrific mood monitors also!!
And you my friend Stewart have a perfect set of ears!!

  6. That’s very cool! My ears flop down in a very handsome manner. My sissy’s stand up, but that’s because hers were cropped. Boxer ears don’t stand up on their own.

  7. Susie and Sidebite says:

Man, those ears are cuties. We use our ears for everything, but bestest is mood shows. Now bites can hear stuff way of cause he has BIG radar ears, and he like them rubbed, so do I and Dad is really good at it!

Aw Stu…mom just loved it when our ears started standing up, especially since one went up before the other.

Can we tell you a secret? Neither of us has ever lifted our leg!! – Mom thinks it’s because they are too short and we’ll fall over *BOL*

My wee dog is 13 wks and his ears aren’t fully up! kinda half and folded at the top – will they continue to prick up or stay folded?

  16. Toni says:

I have an 11 wk old Scottie girl. Her 1 ear was up but now both are down! Did something happen? Is there something I can do? Or should I just wait and eventually will they go up??? Help!!

    • Have you tried taking her to a groomer and having her head and ears shaped with clippers??? Taking weight from the ears help them stand up at an early age. Let me know.

      • Toni Fasano says:

Hi! She really doesn’t have much hair on her ears! It’s very short! I actually brought her today to groomers to pick up my Westie! I wanted to show them Sammi! She even said there’s not really much she can do! The puppy beats up (lol) my 4yr old westie! It’s so funny but when she hurts him he gets made! They are always playing and get along great! Thanks for gettin back to me!
