This is Stuart with his friend, Dixie, who’s a Westie. Contrary to what some folks think, Dixie is NOT a white Scottie. She’s a West Highland White Terrier. And that’s the end of that. There is no such thing as a white Scottie.
THIS is what these folks confuse with a white Scottie:
So is this:
And these two precious pups (along with some brindles):
There are black Scotties.Wheaten Scotties. Brindle Scotties. Black Brindle Scotties. Red Brindle Scotties. And Silver Brindle Scotties.
So now you know!
But wait!? What about Stuart’s white markings?
Yes. Some white is allowed in the breed standard, but not as much as Stuart had from the Wheaten gene in his lineage.
He sported his white “tuxedo” look with pride didn’t he? And there’ll never be another one like him.
Brush up….there may be a pop quiz coming up one Saturday. Are YOU a Saturday Scottie Scholar?
yep that was unique :o) I never saw a red brindle scottie, but I will wear my mommas glasses at the the next show, maybe I can discover one :O)
You got that right! There will never be another one like him! Stuart, the ultimate Scottie! ππππ
Proud, debonair and dignified!
McDuff & Mom
Not only are Scotties never totally white, a Westie (West Highland WHITE terrier) is never anything but white. Kyla made me an honorary Scottie, a blue and orange brindle.
Our Lucy is a ‘silver brindle’. Thanks for mentioning that coloring. And as for the ‘tuxedo’ Stuart wore , you were right in saying he wore it well..
L&M’s mom peep…
We have a black Scottie and a Westie, and they look great together. (Westies can only be white, unlike Cairns, who look similar to Westies, and can be any color but white.) We take our Scottie and Westie with us as many places as possible, and frequently hear the comment: “Look at the Scotties!” Then we educate the people. Sometimes, after the education, the next question is: “So are they related?” “Um . . . well . . . they live in the same house, and we consider them brothers, and they’re both Scottish dogs, so they’re related that way, but remember, they are different breeds.” Regardless, we love the attention they get and that they bring smiles to the faces of so many people. As for a Red Brindle Scottie, we got the pleasure of meeting a Red Brindle puppy named Ted at a Terrier specialty show many years ago, and he was just the cutest little thing. Looked a bit like Alf (for those who remember the TV show). Stuart was just so classy with his special “tuxedo” look!!! (BTW, we also had a Westie named Dixie; she lived to be almost 18!)
I am a black Scottie and Andy is a silver brindle (that’s why he looks like an old man, hehe). Elsa was a black miniature schnauzer. People always thought we were all related. When we said Elsa was a schnauzer, they then thought me n Andy were schnauzers. sheesh! Stuart was a Fred Astaire Scottie – Puttin’ on his top hat n tails. He cut quite a picture of elegance and mischief!
Thanks for this primer on Scottie colors. Stuart was always dressed for a party. π My Bonny Rose’s blonde color really confuses people. They think she’s a white Schnauzer! Peeshaw….she’s a Scottie through and through! Since most folks think Scotties only come in a black color, they always get an education about Scotties when they meet her.
We studied really hard, cuz we wanna pass da quiz! We want you and Stu to be proud of us!
Stu was always ready to attend a formal affair–he is such a Scottish Gentleman (and Scholar too!) He is truly unique and we are so glad he is! We love him with his Gorgeous white Tuxedo markings and the very creative signature white on his neck down part of his back! He is very SPECIAL!!
So many people we meet when we walk think we are Schnauzers! Oh Brudder!
Thank you for the very educative Saturday post! We Know Stu would want us to get it right!! We certainly wanna be Saturday Scottie Scholars!
Love and Aroooos!
Riley-Puppy and Tessie-Girl
Stuart was a very unique Scottie!! Definitely one of a kind.
Crikey! All this time I thought the “Black and White Whiskey dogs were Scottie dogs!
Very interesting post. π
Stuart always wore his formal dinner suit.
We are a family of mixed colored Scotties. People always ask about their coloring. They think that Shelby is a Westie. We know better. If I’m not mistake, my breeder said that there are 9 colors of Scotties. Thanks for educating people.
ooh! I hope we’d be considered scholars…Edgar is a silver brindle. Everyone thinks he’s very old…
