Do you grain free feed your furbaby? Or grain?
We recently had a conversation with our FABULOUS vet about diet. Sherlock’s peeps sent us the recent FDA news about grain free diets and DCM. (Where have we been?)
Now we want to know what YOU feed your Scot. (Or your pooch who’s not a Scot. All doggie diets are welcome here.)
We’ve been on the hunt. Researching. Asking around. Following up with others.
What’s the verdict? Here’s a clue. That bag of food next to Mr. Winston weighs twice as much as he does. Ugh.

we get meat and such stuff… but although we eat grainfree we snitch bread and buns as much as we can…and cake..

We all have our dogs teeth cleaned. Take precautions an ask about the anesthesia before the procedure.

Our vet believes practically all “regular” dog food is balanced with what dogs need. Some have more fat. I asked about the Blue Buffalo for ours and she said it had too much fat for daily consumption. We have always used Science Diet Weight diets ( both RX and non RX). With the exception of Elsa who left us way too soon due to non diet issues all our pups have lived long healthy lives. I know there are pros/cons to just about every diet, I think you just have to find what’s right for Mr Winston.
PPSS – vet also said it depends on how your particular dog’s system processes the food. Some need more fat or grain or meat than others.
Mommy read the FDA report too. We don’t eat any of the dog food listed. However, our fabulous vet is not against grain if it is not a “top” ingredient or a dog has problems with grains. Kali and I don’t. We have homemade dehydrated sweet potato chips as treats. Our breakfast is a little premium wet food, salmon and sweet potato kibble with, fresh/frozen green beans, apples and carrots. Dinner is wet food, kibble and then a power green like Kale, broccoli, collard greens, etc. We REALLY like veggies – all organic. Mommy says we eat better than she does. We also have Science Diet Dental Kibble as treats.
Are sunflower seeds a grain?
Finley has been on Royal Canin dog food since before I ever took him home from his breeder. Of course, once he was no longer a ‘puppy’ he is on the one for small/adults. I add a little warm water to it to make a ‘gravy’. He eats twice a day and his evening meal I add a little baked sweet potato, and either carrots, peas, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli or green beans and a little water to his meal. During the day he may get some apple, a tablespoon of plain yogurt or a bit of a hard-boiled egg. His coat is beautiful and his vet said he is in fine shape.
In our house, we give grain free, but hopefully, you will find something to your liking. Thanks for the share. Have a wonderful rest of your week.
NO GRAIN FREE
Grain-free and then some for my Westie and dachshund. Anything with rice, wheat, or corn in her kibble and the Westie starts having tummy troubles. It amazes me that there are brands out there (still!) that list corn as the first ingredient. Don’t they get it? Corn is not good for dogs, otherwise may as well feed’em cornflakes!
We had all the same questions. Bailey a 9 years Scottie, was eating science diet until that last recall. Our vet is not a fan of grain free as a regular diet so I switched to the same food he feeds his dogs Eukanuba both dry and wet. He tolarated the change well.
My Dogster say dat we, dogs, DO need some grain so I got off da grain-free train.

Piper has been on Acana Ranchlands since she was a pup and is fit as a fiddle at 12 now, she does get the odd pizza crust or pretzel so she isn’t completely grainfree though…
