The explanation makes no sense to me. I don’t care how far away the source of the sound is, the time taken between one ear and the other is the same. I can explain why dogs don’t hear words like “come” but do hear words (even spoken more softly) like “treat”.

Wiff all due respect, we thinks dat that’s all well and scientific an explanation, but why do we cock our heads when mummy is talking to us and looking straight at us???! We is LISTENING to her cuz we wants to know only 2 things: 1. Is there any FOOD involved in what she’s saying? and 2. Is she gonna say da WALKIES word or da go to da PARK words. We has simple needs like FOOD and PLAY which involvle da Peeps, so we has to pay close attention. We is able to Pee, Poop, Sleep and Tear Up stuff on our own wiffout dem, so we just has to concentrate on da stuff we love to do dat da Peeps can make happen, so we cocks our head to pay special attention to see if we catch those “Magical” words that excite us so much—-FOOD and WALKIES and Go to da DOG PARK or Regular PARK (so we can pick up all of our PEE-mail!) Dat’s WHY we Cock our heads!!
If we don’t think dat our “Magical” words are gonna be uttered, den we do what Stu is doing in today’s picture: “Talk to da back, (TAIL).”

I just love it when Andy and Duffy cock their heads in unison the same direction when we speak to them. I wonder why they don’t do it all the time. You would think they would if they are trying to triangulate sound. But trying to figure this out makes my head hurt. I think I’ll just enjoy it for what it is – pure joy and fun to watch.
