If you’ve ever wondered why dogs cock their heads, here’s why. Now we know. Makes perfect sense to me.
And I always thought it was because Stuart was so interested in what I was saying. Not.
He really wasn’t interested here….turned all the way around to stop listening to whatever it was I was saying! LOL.
About The Scottie Chronicles
Winston welcomes you to The Scottie Chronicles - a blog that began in 2009 as a voice for Stuart, a more than memorable black, brindle and white Scottish Terrier who captured hearts around the world. Stuart passed suddenly in December 2015 from cardiac hemangiosarcoma, a nasty cancer that took him far too early. If you love Scotties, please follow along. Arroooo!
The explanation makes no sense to me. I don’t care how far away the source of the sound is, the time taken between one ear and the other is the same. I can explain why dogs don’t hear words like “come” but do hear words (even spoken more softly) like “treat”.
“TREAT!!” You’re right. Apparently, I wasn’t speaking the same language he wanted to hear.
BOL! But maybe Stuart turned his head around from you because he heard another curious sound behind him? Hey, you never know!
McDuff & Mom
I think not. I think he was taking great pleasure in being rude.
Think they cock their head to decide if they want to respond or not to our beckoning…. and I’ve also seen it when the sound is totally new so they are trying to figure it out. So damn cute our little roos….
Ozzy & Callie’s Mom
I think you’re right. About the roos too!
Wiff all due respect, we thinks dat that’s all well and scientific an explanation, but why do we cock our heads when mummy is talking to us and looking straight at us???! We is LISTENING to her cuz we wants to know only 2 things: 1. Is there any FOOD involved in what she’s saying? and 2. Is she gonna say da WALKIES word or da go to da PARK words. We has simple needs like FOOD and PLAY which involvle da Peeps, so we has to pay close attention. We is able to Pee, Poop, Sleep and Tear Up stuff on our own wiffout dem, so we just has to concentrate on da stuff we love to do dat da Peeps can make happen, so we cocks our head to pay special attention to see if we catch those “Magical” words that excite us so much—-FOOD and WALKIES and Go to da DOG PARK or Regular PARK (so we can pick up all of our PEE-mail!) Dat’s WHY we Cock our heads!!
If we don’t think dat our “Magical” words are gonna be uttered, den we do what Stu is doing in today’s picture: “Talk to da back, (TAIL).”
Love and barks, dear Teacher,
Riley-Puppy and Tessie-Girl
TALK TO THE TAIL! You’re so right. Sorry I forgot about that one!
I just love it when Andy and Duffy cock their heads in unison the same direction when we speak to them. I wonder why they don’t do it all the time. You would think they would if they are trying to triangulate sound. But trying to figure this out makes my head hurt. I think I’ll just enjoy it for what it is – pure joy and fun to watch.
It makes my head hurt, too! I think they’re just being curious and wish they knew what you were saying. Seeing those two in unison would make my head explode. Cuteness beyond belief.
Mana has been trying to think like ke a dog for at least 40 years. She hasn’t caught on so far.
My peeps get an “F” when they try to elevate their game to “burd brain”.
I will continue to believe that they are beyond interested in my thoughts. I’m just saying.
I believe that too. They want so badly to understand. (I think they do understand.)
Scotties have their own agenda!!
That they do!
I never listen to Ma. Okays, sometimes. When there are cookies involved. Or freeze-dried chickens…I loves those freeze dried chickens! Other than that..nah.
Oh, and I really don’t have to cock my heads, my ears do that all on their own! BOL
HA! You’re a funny one Miss Ruby.
Nah! It is because I am just so interesting! (to the dogs!) ❤
Oh boy. THAT’S why! : )
I always watched Forrest do this but Doc doesn’t..
I used to imagine Forrest would sound like Goofy..and that he was thinking ‘i can do left..i can do right..i can do left..i can do right’
Bless i gave him less credit than i know he deserved 🙂 xxc
He just wanted to know what you were saying and thinking. Don’t be hard on yourself. (I do that enough for the both of us.)
Thanks sweets..think we both are beating ourselves up 🙂
that means I can stop to read books to Easy, right? LOL
