There’s Never a Good Time

I always heard that when planning for a child, there’s never a good time. People seem to wait for this or that, but there never seems to be a good time to add to your family. As a child-free person, I’ve never thought about that stuff.

When the Dad Peep and I finally realized that our house wasn’t going to be a home again without four feet clicking around on the hard wood floors, we never seemed to find the right time to do it.

Then, when we decided to adopt a boy in need, we were turned down. And when a breeder with a little boy – pick of the litter he said – asked if we’d breed him and show him, we knew that wasn’t going to work out either.

We decided that the universe was saying, “it’s not time yet.” Our house still hasn’t sold so we haven’t moved yet but still plan to, we’ve got a trip planned over Christmas, I’ve got a conference on the West Coast to attend in November, and on top of that Sherlock is coming to visit on Friday while his peeps are away.

About a week or so ago, though, we got a couple of phone calls and texts from two different people about a woman in North Carolina with puppies to place. Huuum. Since we were going down there anyway, to see the Dad Peep’s mother, it’d be easy to stop by wouldn’t it? Yes. It. Would. After many phone calls, texts and lots of soul searching, we decided we’d go for a visit, but only for future reference. To meet her. Just in case she had a litter sometime. In the future you understand. So we bought a new crate. Just in case. But we were only going to look.

I think you know how that little visit worked out.

On the way home September 18 2017

Whew. I thought they’d never make up their mind.

There we were. If it hadn’t been for the lead the breeder gave us, we’d have had none. No brushes. No bowls. No collar. No nothing. Couldn’t even get a vet appointment until next week.

Time to start all over.

And we couldn’t be more thrilled. Thank you for your encouragement. Your support. Your friendship. Your interest. And your love of all companions who make the world a lot nicer.

Introducing: Winston. A Cinco de Mayo boy. 18 weeks old. Black with brindle feet and some brindle on his tail and ears.

By the way, he’s got an absolutely precious sister. Just in case… I’m jus’ sayin’.

About The Scottie Chronicles

Winston welcomes you to The Scottie Chronicles - a dog blog that began in 2009 as a voice for Stuart, a more than memorable black, brindle and white Scottish Terrier who captured hearts around the world. Stuart passed suddenly in December 2015 from cardiac hemangiosarcoma, a nasty cancer that took him far too early. He would have been 11 years old in March 2017. The Scottie Chronicles is dedicated to Stuart and the joy he shared with everyone who met him or saw him from afar. If you love Scotties, please follow along. Arroooo!

This was meant to be. You and the dad peep were ‘somewhat’ prepared, but cautious, to go and acquaint yourselves with the breeder, and I can’t blame you. When things don’t work out as we’d like them to, as hard as it is to say, I feel it wasn’t in the cards. This was in the cards! Winston is one lucky Scottie, and so are you both!

    I love happy endings!

  2. OH my dog! Winston was born on my birthday!!!!!

  3. rjkeyedup says:

Mommy nearly fell off the chair laughing at ‘we’d only just look’,,,,
Winston shares the same birthday as me! Aroo for cinque de mayo scottie boys!!!!
Welcome to the blog little guy – Ozzy!!!

  4. Roxanne, Callie, Mandy & Yadi says:

There is always a right time. It is when it happens. The right Scottie found you and the right time. Welcome Winston !!!

  5. rjkeyedup says:

Wait til Sherlock sees him! You will have the joy of two silly scotties scampering around the house… it doesn’t get any better than that.

  6. The same thing happened to mummy and her sister. It was their mother’s 50th birthday and they planned to get her another siamese kitten (to replace a recently deceased beloved family pet) which was proving rather difficult. Anyway, they found an available male kitten and travelled “just to view him”. Yes, took a cage, “just in case” and guess what they came home with him and their mummy was thrilled to bits with him. Two Scotties are two more to love……

There’s never a good time to bring a dog into a dogless home? It’s worse being dogless, said the Raven. You named him after a cigarette? You should have called him something that starts with “K” like KOOL.

  8. nordhuesn says:

He will give you much joy. We have only had 4 legged kids the past 32 years and we did not plan any of them. They found us…….and we were also “just looking” a couple of times. Congrats!!!!!

Welcome, Winston (and maybe sister?) This worked out the way it was meant to. May you have many years of happy memories to be made.

  17. WestScott says:

The time was right as evidenced by the fact that you and Winston now have each other! What a lucky little boy he is! I agree with others that you might want to entertain the thought of getting his sister. With two, no one is ever alone. We also have no people children, but have always had two or three doggies at any given time, and we can’t imagine life without them. Hopefully Winston and Sherlock will get along famously after they get familiar with each other. Though Sherlock has spent time at your house in the past, this is now Winston’s house. As with the others, I’m really looking forward to the pictures and stories that will be coming!

  18. Kaci says:

I agree this the others – two is MUCH better than one. I don’t know what I would do without Kali. She and I are best pals and don’t really miss the peeps too much when they are gone b/c we have each other. BTW, she was rescued from Halo when HE just went to look around. Lucky me.

  19. corkscot says:
